Motivation

I was having coffee with my friend Bill a few days ago when he said, “I’m worried about a buddy of mine.
He’s unemployed and is having serious financial problems. He has good skills in his field, I know there are jobs out there and he says he wants to work but he doesn’t go out and apply for them. I’ve known him and his wife for 20 years and they are starting to feel the strain in their relationship. I consider him to be a friend but I don’t know what I can do to help him. Do you have any advice?”

I said, “I wouldn’t presume to advise anybody on a situation like that without knowing more about your buddy. But I do know some things that might be helpful.”
Then I went on to explain.

“There are four main reasons people don’t do something.
A) They don’t want to.
B) They don’t need to
C) They don’t know how to.
D) They don’t believe they can do it. In other words, they lack confidence.
You said A, B and C do not seem to be the problem. Perhaps his barrier is a lack of belief in himself at this time.”
He said he would explore that possibility with him. Maybe I can help him to restore his confidence in himself.

I gave him a couple of ideas to help his buddy. Maybe the next time you feel your motivation lessening or witness it in an employee or client you can try them.
First, confirm that you have A, B, and C handled. If not take the appropriate steps necessary to correct the problem.

If you determine the issue is confidence then try these.

1. Make a list of all the positive qualities you possess.

2. Review all your achievements in the area where the crisis in confidence exists.

3. Remind yourself of the consequences for failure to act.

4. Remind yourself of the rewards for taking positive action.
