Patricia and I finished our stay in Lucerne , Switzerland and drove our rental car down through the Alps to Como, Italy on our way to Venice. As I recall, the tunnel connecting the two countries at that point is about 10 to 12 miles long.
Most of us remember from our history classes in school, the story of thePF52257.33 Carthaginian military commander Hannibal. His exploits during the Second Punic War was the stuff that Miss Hartung routinely used to promote my mid-morning naps during my less than impressive journey through Sandusky High School.
Long before the tunnel was built Hannibal managed to cross the Alps and so surprised the Roman legions when he arrived at the Rhone River that he easily defeated them.
What is overlooked in that Cliff Notes version of the story is the arduousness of the trip itself and the battles his army fought against the tribes occupying much of the terrain as they made their way from Hispania using war elephants to overwhelm their enemies.
I have been impressed not just with the sheer brilliance of Hannibal’s strategy but also with his determination to succeed. I ask myself, “How can we employ that same level of determination and persistence to achieve our goals?” I believe they can be summed up in 3 simple rules:
1. Be sure our goal is related to our main purpose in life.
2. Keep our goal in front of us by using the Treasure Map technique I detailed in my book “Build Your Dream: 12 Essential Tools for Successful Living”.
3. Use affirmations and visualize us as already being successful.
Success Thought for today:
“We must either find a way or make one.”
– Hannibal
